Telemedicine for PAD: New publication shows improvements in walking ability and pain reduction
We congratulate our colleague Fabian Wiesmüller from our cooperation partner AIT and the co-authors on the successful publication of the study “Support of Home-Based Structured Walking Training and Prediction of the 6-Minute Walk Test Distance in Patients With Peripheral Arterial Disease Based on Telehealth Data” in the journal JMIR Cardio.
The prospective cohort study investigated the effects of structured, telemedicine-supported walking training on patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD).
Results at a glance:
High adherence and acceptance: With an average performance of 85% of the recommended 6-minute walking tests, there is a high level of adherence and thus a high level of acceptance of the telemedical training program.
Improvement in physical performance: The distance covered in the 6-minute walk test increased significantly over the course of the study, as did mobility, which improved significantly in the timed-up-and-go test.
Pain and well-being: The reported pain intensity decreased significantly. Subjective well-being showed a positive correlation with walking distance and number of steps.
Predictive model: A regression model was able to predict the distance covered in the 6-minute walk test at the end of the study with an accuracy of 30 meters at the beginning.
The study shows how telemedical training programs can improve the physical performance of PAD patients.

HerzMobil as a national telemedical care program for patients with heart failure in Austria
In Austria, more than 14,000 deaths due to heart failure and 24,000 hospitalizations are recorded each year. Around 3% of the total population in Austria suffer from heart failure, with the incidence increasing significantly with age. HerzMobil is a telemedical and telecare disease management program for patients with heart failure. The software solution was developed by AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH and is serviced by telbiomed in standard care. The benefits of HerzMobil have already been proven by numerous evaluations. With the available results from medical and health economic studies and the structured connection to ELGA, HerzMobil represents the basis for an Austria-wide disease management program for the care of patients with heart failure in Austria.

telbiomed listed in the “Telemonitoring” segment of B2B Telemedicine Map 2025
A few days ago, the new B2B Telemedicine Map 2025 was published by arztkonsultation. We are very pleased that telbiomed Medizintechnik und IT Service GmbH has been included as a provider in the telemonitoring segment.
Here is the link to the map.
A stroke occurs every 20 minutes. Around 25,000 Austrians suffer a stroke every year. After cardiovascular disease and cancer, stroke is the third most common cause of death in Austria.
StrokeNet, a telehealth service for outpatient rehabilitation after a stroke, supports mobile rehabilitation and is a solution for coordinating integrated, home-based care for patients after an acute stroke event. The TBM CareManager supports close coordination between all partners involved (doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists) with the involvement of clinics, rehabilitation facilities, social insurance providers and coordination centers.
The aim of the care program is to improve and sustain the success of treatment for stroke patients after acute follow-up treatment in hospital by optimally coordinating further treatment in an outpatient setting.
The HerzMobil Tirol care program is coordinated and implemented by the Tyrolean State Institute for Integrated Care (LIV). Every year, around 350 patients are cared for by HerzMobil Tirol after being discharged from hospital. HerzMobil Tirol is financed by the state of Tyrol, the social insurance institutions and funds from the Tyrolean Health Fund.
HerzMobil Tirol currently employs 65 network doctors and 17 nursing staff. The care provided by HerzMobil Tirol not only involves close monitoring of health values, but also supports patients in changing to a healthier lifestyle.
The successful HerzMobil Tirol concept is constantly being developed further. A new traffic light system for the participating network doctors is intended to further improve the quality of therapy and, in particular, the adjustment of medication. “The traffic light system shows the treating doctors the quality of the current therapy on a daily basis. This allows for an even more targeted response and optimization. We are currently launching a new study in Tyrol and Styria to scientifically test whether we can work even more efficiently with this new system,” explains Gerhard Pölzl, Medical Director of HerzMobil Tirol.

Did you know that ....
- around 60 million people worldwide suffer from heart failure?
- around 300,000 people in Austria alone suffer from heart failure?
- up to 50 percent of patients die within 5 years of being hospitalized for heart failure?
- there are around 24,000 hospitalizations per year due to the diagnosis?
These hospitalizations not only worsen the prognosis of patients suffering from heart failure, but also mean considerable costs for the healthcare system.
The telemedical care program HerzMobil was developed to tackle this problem and improve the quality of life of people with heart failure.
HerzMobil leads to better management of the disease and fewer hospital stays. Further advantages of the telemonitoring program:
- Relief for the inpatient sector
- Reduction in healthcare expenditure
- Reduction in avoidable hospital admissions
- Reduction in mortality (25.7% to 10.0%)
HerzMobil is currently financed by the respective regional health funds and social insurance in Tyrol, Styria, Carinthia and Lower Austria. The respective establishment of the care program is individually adapted to local conditions and implemented in coordination with each federal state.
Through the use of the program in standard care, the experience and proven benefits are increasing, as evidenced by numerous studies and evaluations, which is why HerzMobil is increasingly establishing itself as a potential telemedical care program for patients with heart failure and nationwide use in Austria.
Together with our development partner AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH, we develop and configure telehealth software solutions for various indications and specific clinical pictures.
We are delighted to have won the Startup Pitch Contest at the 6th Praevenire Digital Health Symposium, which took place from April 18 - 19, 2024 at the Hotel Le Méridien, Vienna.
The TBM CareManager can be used for many different indications. As a reference application, we mentioned HerzMobil in our pitch - a multidisciplinary, telemedical care program for patients with heart failure. We would like to thank our strategy partner, the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, for the successful implementation of HerzMobil, as well as our application partners in the federal states of Tyrol, Styria and Carinthia (www.herzmobil.at).
Many thanks to the entire Praevenire team for the successful Digital Health Symposium 2024!
In mid-February 2024, the pharmaceutical company Janssen-Cilag GmbH published an open house position paper entitled “Value Based Healthcare: Aligning healthcare with patient outcomes”, which was developed together with interdisciplinary experts from the healthcare sector. In the position paper, the authors formulate demands for policymakers to further develop the German healthcare system in line with value-based healthcare (VBHC).
Value-based healthcare is based on the benefits and the health achieved by the patient. The quality of the outcome is compared with the costs in order to achieve the best possible patient benefit. The guiding principle is “outcome over cost”.
We are delighted that the authors have cited the HerzMobil Tirol program as a best practice example for the national and international arena! Congratulations to our long-standing partner, the LIV Landesinstitut für integrierte Versorgung Tirol and the entire HerzMobil team for their pioneering work in patient care.
The “DiLeLi” project by LebensGroß was chosen as the winner of the “Digital!Healthcare” funding call by the Styrian Health Fund.

Rapid Support for Quarantine Monitoring During COVID-19
With TBM Covid-19, TELBIOMED quickly developed an efficient monitoring system in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This was made possible by the long-established TBM Solutions and the system’s modular design, which allows for relatively simple adaptation to specific medical conditions.
TBM Covid-19 supports clinics and public health authorities in the care and management of individuals in quarantine. People in quarantine regularly record their body temperature and respond to relevant health questions. This data is automatically made available in a structured format to authorized healthcare personnel.
Staff from clinics or health authorities can quickly filter for individuals showing abnormal symptoms, enabling efficient and targeted use of resources—especially important in the event of rising numbers of quarantine cases.
Various user roles (e.g., coordinator, nurse, physician) and care networks (centralized or regional) support flexible management and ensure a clear, efficient overview of individuals under supervision.
AIT’s Telehealth Application Wins the “Living Standards Award 2018”
On January 17, 2018, the internationally recognized Living Standards Award was presented for the fourth time in Vienna. The award honors outstanding contributions to the development and application of standards, and is granted by an international expert jury to five selected winners. The team led by Anton Dunzendorfer from the Competence Unit Digital Health Information Systems at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology received the award for their consistent implementation of standards in telehealth applications.
Their work enables seamless and secure integration of medical measurement devices—such as for blood glucose, blood pressure, body weight, and oxygen saturation—used by individuals with chronic conditions. Peter Kastner, thematic coordinator at AIT, explains:
“By adhering to standards, we can integrate various sensors from different manufacturers using a standardized device management system, allowing measured values to be securely and easily transferred to a health app on a smartphone immediately after capture. The data is then synchronized with a central server accessible by the attending physician.”
AIT is regarded as a key driver of innovation in Austria’s healthcare system, particularly in developing new telehealth applications for managing chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart failure, or hypertension. Special attention is given to supporting older patients in their long-term therapy processes. The IT services developed for this purpose—such as DiabMemory, HerzMobil, and DiabCare—along with specific therapy management programs, enable a new and simplified form of communication between physicians, healthcare professionals, and patients.
“In the Health Dialogue program of the Insurance Institution for Railway and Mining Employees (VAEB), where data from a variety of end devices is collected, we support users in self-monitoring and behavior change,” says Kurt Völkl, CEO of VAEB, a long-standing AIT partner in telehealth services.
From the outset, AIT integrates international standards into its innovative developments to ensure long-term usability and scalability of the technologies. AIT actively participates in standardization initiatives such as the Personal Connected Health Alliance, the NFC Forum, and the Bluetooth Special Interest Group. These efforts ensure seamless integration of sensors from various manufacturers, interoperability across system boundaries, and compatibility with Austria’s electronic health record system, ELGA. The goal is to enable digital interaction between people and technology that leads to sustainable improvements in healthcare delivery.
